Bouncing Babies

We are considering starting a special storytime at the library for babies ages 0-18 months. If you are interested, please contact Jen Pace, Children’s Services Coordinator, at jpace@polklibrary.org or 828-894-8721 ext. 227.

Pre-School Storytime

Pre-School Storytime is held on Tuesdays at 10:30am at the Main Library in Columbus and on Thursdays at 12:30pm at Saluda Community Library. This 30 minute program featuring books and stories followed by a craft, snack, or activity is recommended for children ages 3-5.

April 1st: Reading With Ringling Brothers! (***Special Activity: A clown from Ringling Brothers will come to storytime to entertain the kids and read books about the circus!)
April 8th: Rain & Clouds! (Snack/Craft: Fruit Loop Rainbows)
April 15th: Bunnies! (Craft: Bunny Noses)
April 22nd: Earth Day! (Activity: Plant Seeds)
April 29th: Flowers! (Craft: Cupcake Liner Flowers)

Saluda Storytimes:
April 3rd: Circus Fun! (Craft: Paper Plate & Pom Pom Clowns; Activity: Learn how you can get free circus tickets by Reading With Ringling Brothers!)
April 10th: Rain & Clouds! (Snack/Craft: Fruit Loop Rainbows)
April 17th: Bunnies! (Craft: Bunny Noses)
April 24th: Earth Day! (Activity: Plant Seeds)

Afternoon Adventures

Afternoon Adventures is designed for children in grades K-5. This program is held on Mondays at 4pm at the Main Library in Columbus and on two Tuesdays per month at 4pm at Saluda Community Library. Afternoon Adventures is made possible through a grant from the Polk County Community Foundation.

Columbus Afternoon Adventures:
April 7th: Kids Acting Workshop!
John Calure from Tryon Little Theater will teach an acting/theater workshop. Snacks will be served afterwards.
April 14th: Movie Matinee!
Watch “Frozen” (rated PG) and enjoy popcorn and drinks.
April 21st: Earth Day Celebration!
We’ll make crafts out of recycled materials, plant seeds to take home, and have snacks (outside on the deck, weather permitting!).
April 28th: Martial Arts!
Local mixed martial arts instructor Tim Hall will teach a 45 minute class, followed by a board breaking demonstration. Healthy snacks will be served afterwards.

Saluda Afternoon Adventures:
NOTE: THIS MONTH (APRIL 2014) AFTERNOON ADVENTURES WILL BE ON THE 2ND AND 5TH TUESDAY!

Drum Circle

This family-friendly event is on the second and fourth Thursday of every month at 5:30pm. Some instruments are provided but you can bring your own as well. All ages are welcome!

Whole Lotta Shakespeare Goin On’

A Midsummer Night’s Dream: The Green World of Drama and Love

Saluda Library: April 10th at 4:00pm

Dr. Gary Ettari, associate professor of literature and language at the University of North Carolina at Asheville, will present an oral lecture about William Shakespeare.

Reading with Ringling Bros.

Kids, are you interested in reading some cool library books? Are you interested in earning a FREE circus ticket at the same time? Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey and Polk County Public Library will be hosting some serious fun with Reading with Ringling Bros.!

The reading program is easy and fun for kids to participate. The best part is that kids can earn a Ringling Bros. circus ticket by simply reading! Children from ages two to 12 need to enroll with the children’s librarian (Jen Pace), who will give kids everything to start their library reading. This unique library reading program will encourage children not only to read, but also to discover, dream, and learn!

Online Resources

Reading Rockets offers reading comprehension and language arts teaching strategies for kids.

Homework help and other online learning tools are available from NC LIVE (call the library for the password to access resources).

The North Carolina Digital Library, powered by OverDrive, has an eReading Room for kids. Many eBooks are available for download in a variety of subjects: fiction, nonfiction, biography, fantasy, history, humor, mystery, picture books, and science and nature. These eBooks are sortable by interest, ATOS, lexile, and reading levels as well. Children’s videos are also available on the website. To access these digital materials, select CMC Library Consortium as your library from the drop-down menu and then sign in with your library card number and PIN. NCDL eBooks may be checked out and downloaded to your computer and/or a compatible eReader, smartphone, or tablet. For directions on how to download eBooks to your device, click here.

Happy Birthday, Shakespeare!

The Foothills Music Club, Inc. will present a “Happy Birthday, Shakespeare” concert on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. at Isothermal Community College’s Polk Center in Columbus.

April 23 is generally given as the day of Shakespeare’s birth and the music club will commemorate this day by playing a variety of music from the time of Shakespeare.

The concert is free and open to the public and is made possible by a grant from the Polk County Community Foundation to Polk County Public Library. Free copies of A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be available while supplies last. This program is presented as part of “Whole Lotta Shakespeare Goin’ On” in partnership with other regional public libraries and local community organizations.
