All youth (up to age 18) who sign up for a new Polk County Public Library card during the month of September will get to choose a small prize AND be entered into the grand prize drawing for a $75 gift certificate to The Book Shelf in Tryon. September is Library Card Sign-Up Month, a time when Polk County Public Library joins with the American Library Association and other libraries nationwide to make sure that every student has the most important school supply of all – a free library card.

Afternoon Adventures starts back in September! This program is designed for children in grades K-5 and made possible through a grant from the Polk County Community Foundation. Afternoon Adventures is at the Main Library in Columbus on Tuesdays at 4pm and at the Saluda Community Library every other Monday at 4pm.

Columbus Afternoon Adventures: September 2014
Sept. 2: Sea Life Program with Team ECCO
Team ECCO Ocean Center of Hendersonville is bringing the aquarium to us. They will teach an interactive invertebrate class with sea stars, urchins, crabs, and shrimp! The program will involve models, dried specimens, and live creatures.
Sept. 9: Board Games & Snacks
Come play your favorite board games such as Monopoly, Uno, and Sorry and enjoy snacks.
Sept. 16: Hike & Watershed Program with PAC
Pacolet Area Conservancy (PAC) will lead a nature hike on the trails behind the library. Following the hike, they will discuss watersheds and the importance of keeping our watershed clean and free of trash and pollutants. PAC will bring an interactive model to demonstrate effects that human by-products can have on our water systems and sources.
Sept. 23: Martial Arts with Mr. Tim
Mr. Tim is back to teach another martial arts class. Learn some new karate moves and be sure to stick around for his board-breaking demonstration!
Sept. 30: Movie Matinee & Popcorn
Kids who attend the first three events this month will vote on what movie they want to see. The title of the film will be announced on Sept. 17. Come watch it on the big screen and enjoy popcorn and drinks!

image005Sam’s Reading Buddies

Sam the therapy dog will be at the Saluda Community Library with his owner, Nancy Weinhagen, every other Monday at 4pm (Sept. 15 and Sept. 29). Sam loves to listen to stories. Kids can have fun and improve their reading skills at the same time!

Pre-School Storytime

Storytime starts back in September! This program is designed for children ages 3-5 but is open to anyone who wishes to attend. Pre-School Storytime is at the Main Library in Columbus on Tuesdays at 10:30am and at the Saluda Community Library Wednesdays at 10:30am.

Local children’s author Phoebe Blackwell will read selections from her books “The Fairy Door at Lane’s End,” “Hen’s Teeth, Turtle Feathers, & Frog Tails,” and “The Moon Was Hungry.”

Craft: Pirate Hooks
Sept. 23 & 24: Rodents
Craft: M is for Mouse
Sept. 30 & Oct. 1: Cookies
Snack: Cookie Fruit Pizzas

imaginationlibraryDolly Parton’s Imagination Library

FREE BOOKS! All children who live in Polk County can receive one free book per month from the time they are born until they turn five years old! Come to the library and fill out a survey and registration form and return them both to Jen, Youth Services Librarian. Your child will start receiving free books in eight to ten weeks! This program is coordinated by Partnership for Children of the Foothills.

Foothills Humane Society Book Buddies

Foothills Humane Society has a program called Book Buddies, where kids in grades 1-8 read to shelter cats! This program helps children improve their reading skills while also helping the shelter animals by providing socialization and human interaction. Participants also earn prizes such as a coupon for a free scoop or cone at O’Duggan’s Ice Cream and a Book Buddies tote bag! For more information, contact Foothills Humane Society at 828-863-4444.
