Afternoon Adventures is designed for children in grades K-5 and made possible through a grant from the Polk County Community Foundation. Afternoon Adventures is at the Main Library in Columbus on Tuesdays at 4pm and at the Saluda Community Library every other Monday at 4pm.

Columbus Afternoon Adventures
Oct. 28: Cartooning Workshop
Local cartoonist, author, and illustrator Steve Barr will teach a cartooning workshop. Learn to draw aliens and monsters!
Nov. 4: The Wonderful World of Reptiles
In North America, reptiles are everywhere, especially in the southeast. Like it or not, we share our home with these cold-blooded creatures! Experts from Chimney Rock will teach kids the natural history and conservation of our scaly friends with the help of some live animals.
Nov. 18: Creative Writing for Kids
Brittany Hampton Tokar will lead an exercise designed to get kids thinking and creating something of their own on paper. Brittany has an MFA in Creative Writing and has taught creative writing locally at ICC in Columbus. Her short stories and poetry have appeared in various literary journals and have received a number of literary awards. She wants writing to be fun and freeing for kids of all ages and has co-created a creative writing workbook for children.
The library will be closed November 11 for Veteran’s Day and November 27-29 for Thanksgiving.

Sam’s Reading Buddies

Sam the therapy dog will be at the Saluda Community Library with his owner, Nancy Weinhagen, every other Monday at 4pm (Oct. 27, Nov. 10, & Nov. 24). Sam loves to listen to stories. Kids can have fun and improve their reading skills at the same time!

Pre-School Storytime

This program is designed for children ages 3-5 but is open to anyone who wishes to attend. Pre-School Storytime is at the Main Library in Columbus on Tuesdays at 10:30am and at the Saluda Community Library on 1st & 3rd Mondays at 10:30am.

Nov. 3 & 4: Cats
Nov. 17 & 18: Thanksgiving

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library

FREE BOOKS! All children who live in Polk County can receive one free book per month from the time they are born until they turn five years old! Come to the library and fill out a survey and registration form and return them both to Jen, Youth Services Librarian. Your child will start receiving free books in eight to ten weeks! This program is coordinated by Partnership for Children of the Foothills.

Foothills Humane Society Book Buddies

Foothills Humane Society has a program called Book Buddies, where kids in grades 1-8 read to shelter cats! This program helps children improve their reading skills while also helping the shelter animals by providing socialization and human interaction. Participants also earn prizes such as a coupon for a free scoop or cone at O’Duggan’s Ice Cream and a Book Buddies tote bag! For more information, contact Foothills Humane Society at 828-863-4444.
