2015 Summer Reading at Polk County Public Library

COLUMBUS, N.C., (June 3, 2015) – Summer starts with a bang for ages 0-18 at Polk County Public Library with this year’s Summer Reading children’s program “Every Hero Has A Story” and teen program “Unmask!”

Beginning June 10, youth can register to earn prizes for the time they spend reading this summer. Reading during the summer combats “summer slide” while students are out of school, so that literacy skills are not forgotten come fall. Prizes include books, tote bags, water bottles, toys, candy, and other goodies. There will also be grand prize drawings. Teens can enter to win a Kindle Fire or two ziplining tickets to The Gorge in Saluda. Kids can enter to win gift certificates from Green River Adventures and Wildflour Bakery as well as themed superhero, gaming, and maker prize packs.

The library will also be hosting many free events this summer. Teen events for those in grades 6-12 are at the Main Library weekly on Monday afternoons for seven weeks, starting June 15. Activities include a cartooning workshop, a creative writing workshop, Nintendo Wii U free play and competitions, comic book art, t-shirt decorating, a SuperWhoLock Party, and a superhero movie marathon. There will also be a special lock-in on the evening of Friday, July 31. Free snacks will be served at all teen events.

Events for the children’s Summer Reading program start June 16. Chimney Rock State Park will present “Super Snakes & Slimy Salamanders” at 11am at the Columbus Library and 2pm at the Saluda Library. Help celebrate NC State Parks’ Year of the Amphibian by investigating these fascinating critters, meet some resident ambassadors, and learn the differences between reptiles and amphibians.

Additional children’s programs this summer will be on Tuesday mornings and Wednesday afternoons in Columbus and Wednesday mornings in Saluda for seven weeks, starting June 23. Activities include stories, games, crafts, magic shows, science experiments, folk music, LEGOs, movies, a superhero training academy, and cartooning, creative writing, and balloon creation workshops.

For a full events calendar, visit polklibrary.org or a PCPL location. Some programs require advanced registration. Sponsors for the 2015 Summer Reading program include the Friends of the Polk County Public Library, Polk County Community Foundation, Green River Adventures, The Gorge Zipline, Feagan Law Firm, PRO Physical Therapy, Chimney Rock State Park, and Wildflour Bakery. All events are free and open to the public.

Polk County Public Library has a Main Library in Columbus and a branch in Saluda, as well as a bookmobile that travels throughout Polk County. PCPL offers books, movies, music, audiobooks, and downloadable ebooks and audiobooks, as well as public computers and wireless Internet access.
