Local artist Oliver Hoyt displays works at Saluda Library

SALUDA, N. C., (January 9, 2023) During January and February, Saluda Library is featuring SLIMED, a selection of the works of local artist Oliver Hoyt. Stop by the library to view and purchase his artwork during regular business hours. Saluda Library is open Monday through Friday from 9am to 6pm and Saturday from 9am to 1pm. The artist will also host a meet and greet event on Friday, January 13 from 4-6pm at Saluda Library.

What does it mean to drench the icons of popular American culture in black goo? 23-year-old artist Oliver Hoyt has been filled with a fascination for the slow creep of slime for years. He photographs iconic toy characters (Captain America, Beetlejuice, and Chewbacca, to name a few) against colorful backgrounds, as the slime encroaches and consumes them. He also creates drawings, masses of black lines that move with a style and substance unique to him, as Oliver has a neurological disorder that affects him globally. He uses a power chair to ambulate. To draw and take his photographs, Oliver’s arm is supported by a splint, suspended by a bungee cord from a metal clothing rack. This contraption gives him mobility and control over his art. The resulting photographs and drawings are rich in many possible interpretations and viscerally visual appeal.
