Read to a therapy dog at Saluda Library

SALUDA, N. C., (March 10, 2026) Read to a therapy dog on the first and third Tuesdays of the month at Saluda Library! 15 minute appointments are available between 4:15-5:45pm. The new “Paws For Reading” program is a partnership between Polk County Public Libraries and Canine Therapy Partners-WNC.

Paws for Reading is an interactive program aimed at encouraging children to read aloud in a safe and positive environment without criticism or correction of mistakes. As educators and parents know, reading is the most fundamental skill students need to learn to be successful not only in school, but in life. Research has proven that reading aloud, in a safe and positive environment, helps children develop reading skills, self-esteem, and a positive attitude towards learning. Every therapy dog team has extensive obedience training, is certified with Alliance of Therapy Dogs, and has completed a reading workshop to ensure an excellent experience for each child.

Please register for this event at polklibrary.org/paws-for-reading. If you would like for your child to be a part of this reading activity, you will need to complete and sign a waiver at Saluda Library prior to the appointment. A parent/guardian is required to be in the room observing the session with their child. The therapy dogs will be led by their handler during the reading session.

Polk County Public Libraries has two libraries, Columbus Library and Saluda Library, with books, movies, music, audiobooks, and downloadable eBooks and audiobooks available for checkout, as well as public computers and wireless internet access. PCPL also offers regularly scheduled virtual and in-person programs for all ages. To learn more, visit www.polklibrary.org.
