December’s Spice: Nutmeg

Recipe: Nutmeg Sugar Cookies

 

 

 

 

 

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg, plus more for sprinkling (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Frosting (optional)

DIRECTIONS

  1. Preheat over to 350°.
  2. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy, 5-7 minutes. Beat in egg and vanilla.
  3. Combine flour, nutmeg, and salt; gradually add to creamed mixture and mix well.
  4. Divide dough into 14 pieces. Shape each portion into a 1/2 inch thick rope. Cut ropes into 2 inch long pieces. Place 2 inches apart on greased baking sheets.
  5. Bake for 9-12 minutes or until set and bottoms are lightly browned. Cool for 1 minute before removing to wire racks to cool completely.
  6. Frost cookies and sprinkle with nutmeg, if desired. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
